Excited with No Reason

It was inspired by the “intangible vibrations of contemporary life in China.” Hangfeng Chen was fascinated by the history of colonial conquest, transnational capital, and the exchange of knowledge and species. He explored how these elements shaped current geopolitics. The animation Excited with No Reason delves into these topics with humor and sharp visuals. It explores the modern concept of time, supported by capital and scientific rationalism, which promise a smooth journey from chaos to utopia. This lively animated collage features ink painting, traditional gods and immortals, and traded goods from both the past and present, including porcelain, endangered birds, cars, and cosmetics. Reminiscent of Dada collage, especially the witty juxtapositions by Hannah Höch, Excited with No Reason represents a natural progression for an artist who moves between Shanghai and Amsterdam, following paths once dominated by the Dutch East India Company.
